Egg ban row

Dec 20, 2011: The Government has come under attack for failing to do enough to stop illegal egg imports once a ban on battery cages comes into force on January 1.

The UK egg industry, animal welfare campaigners and politicians have slated the Government over its response to the threat.

Some countries have failed to abide by the new EU?rule, and could profit from supplying cheap, illegal eggs, particularly ones used in food.

Farming Minister Jim Paice promised ‘tough action’ to prevent eggs produced in battery cages being sold in the UK. But measures he announced fell short of those demanded by the egg industry.
